About Troop 838

Troop 838's mission is to provide a well rounded scouting experience with an emphasis on advancement and high adventure.

Advancement: We want all our scouts to have the opportunity to reach the Eagle rank by the age of sixteen if possible. If they attend regular meetings and outings, and develop the personal initiative required for the final rank they should obtain the rank.

Camping: We plan for one campout each month and go whether rain, shine or snow. Examples of past trips include our sports campout, cooking campout, Fin & Fun (fishing) campout, survival man campout and our annual Wolf Creek Ski Trip.  In addition, the troop attends and puts on a Summer and Winter Camp of each year.  To find out what we are doing now, check out our newsletters on the news page.

High adventure:   We try to emphasize the "Big Three" in high adventure on a rotating basis - Philmont, Sea Base, Northern Tier. These are BSA sponsored high adventure camps.  In addition, the troop does a Wolf Creek Ski trip on MLK weekend of each year.  In 2009 we are going to the Big Bend National Park and Colorado for rafting.  In 2010 members of the the troop will be going to National Jamboree. and in 2011 we will be going to World Jamboree and Sea Base.

In the last five years we have enjoyed the following activities:

  • Presented more than 40 scouts with the rank of Eagle Scout in the last five years.
  • Canadian 50 mile canoe trek at Northern Tier, a national BSA camp.
  • SCUBA camp, training, certification and diving in the Florida Keys.
  • Summer backpacking treks in New Mexico.
  • Kanik; a winter camping trek at Philmont Scout Ranch, the premier national scout camp.
  • Sea Base Cruise; a one week sailing outing in the Florida Keys.
  • 2001 National Jamboree; an event that occurs every four years, which includes 45,000 scouts camping at Fort A.P. Hill in Virginia for nine days. Our trip included a four day stop in our nation's capitol, and two days in New York City.  .
  • Weekend campouts to the state fish hatchery, Schlitterbahn water park, NASA, rock climbing/rappelling, canoeing on the Brazos, a visit to Little Rock Air Force Base, and water skiing.
