Wolf Creek 2010 - Get it on !!

Troop 838's annual Wolf Creek Ski Trip is by far the most popular high adventure trip we take. Open to all Scouts, Wolf Creek is returning once again for 2010.  Originally "reconnoitered" by Earl Jackson, Layne Pochmann and sons  in 2006,  this will be 838's fourth year to attend and we have a blast..  Wolf Creek, - the best snow in Colorado is  a little hideaway near South Fork, Colorado.   No experience required.  For a lot of our scouts, this  trip was their first experience skiing.  Snow Sports merit badge is taught.   Cost - $450.00 per person all inclusive - where can you get a three day ski trip for that.

Note: Snow Sports is a hazardous sport.  Injuries can and do occur.  We have had no injury on any of the Wolf Creek Trips.  This is accomplished by training which is comprised of lectures, testing and rules.  We hydrate and hydrate prior to departure.  No ski football on the slopes.  No dancing with the trees, i.e., racing through wooded areas.  The Owl team reserves the right to deny any scout a lift ticket for hazardous activity that endangers himself and/or others.   In addition, the Owls are all parents - your scout is their son while on this trip.

Equipment Guidelines

It is COLD!!!!!! This is not Spring Break Skiing.  You won’t be catching any tan down at the warming hut.

COTTON KILLS.  Dress appropriately for high alpine skiing.

GLOVES: Gloves should be very well insulated designed for snow sports.  You want to use the kind that go over the wrist. This is HUGE! Don’t bring the little gloves that kids wear to school on those chilly Texas winter days.  They will not work.

SOCKS. NO COTTON. Two pair of wool calf length socks is good. Ski boots are well insulated. With a wool sock, your feet will not get cold.  With cotton, they will fall off in pain.

SKI GOGGLES.  Well ventilated.  A descent inexpensive pair from Academy is just fine – as long as they vent.  Otherwise, moisture builds up on the inside, which freezes and renders the goggle useless.   A decent pair of sunglasses is very helpful.

SKI PANTS.  Basic pair of water resistant ski pants that you can find at Academy or Sports Authority.  JEAN Skiing is bad news. Once jeans get wet, they lose all insulation factors and will not dry. Cotton absorbs sweat. Body heat will melt snow.

SKI HELMET.  Our package does not offer ski/snowboard helmets.  Clearly a helmet is a good safety measure.  If you so desire to have one, they are available for purchase at ski and sporting goods stores around town.

SNOW SPORTS MERIT BADGE.  We will offer it.  The safety requirements will be offered prior to our departure.

 More to come . . . Hydrate . . . Hydrate . . . Hydrate . . . we will be on a hydration regimen prior to departure.
